From Diapers to Decor, in Five Easy Steps
The diaper. Not only has this been a staple tool used in every mom’s arsenal of baby gear for decades, but the diaper is also a symbol recognized around the world, which represents new motherhood, parenting, and yes, babies!
Any new or expecting mother will soon find herself up to her elbows in diapers, the mere sight of which is going to get VERY old, VERY quickly. So why not give our new momma at least one pleasant memory of these functional baby bottoms? How, you ask? Why, with a baby diaper themed baby shower of course!
Although this may seem like a strange and daunting task, throwing a diaper themed baby shower can be a unique, inexpensive, and fun opportunity which will create an enjoyable event that all guests are sure to remember, and yes, especially the mother-to-be.
Here’s how in 5 simple steps.
The first step to any project is to make a list of, and then gather together, all of the supplies you will need. Below I have included a little list to get you started.
Party Location (either someone’s home or a venue)
White Construction Paper
Large Safety Pin
Small Safety Pins
Colorful Safety Pins
Food, Snacks, Drinks and a Cake (diaper themed of course!)
Once you have gathered together your supplies, you are going to want to either book a venue or find a suitable home to host the event. Then, you will need guests, so go ahead and compile a list of all the people you plan on inviting (generally women who are close friends with the expecting mother). But how will your guests know about the event? This is where the white construction paper, scissors, and small safety pins come in. You can cut diaper-sh aped cards out of the white construction paper, and add one of the safety pins for a little extra flare . If you are feeling ambitious, you can even make the cards in the form of a baby wearing a diaper. Make sure to include all relevant information for the guests on the cards, such as the date, time and location.
What kind of diaper-themed baby shower doesn’t have plenty of diaper-themed decorations? This is the fun part where you can get very creative. You can use diapers to make the diaper decor (Clean, unused ones, I hope!). Here are some ideas to get you started:
-Use cloth diapers for napkins at the tables.
-Cut out diaper shaped place-mats and place cards with guests’ names on them where you would like them to sit.
-Drape streamers cut from baby diapers from the ceiling.
-Bake (or buy) a diaper shaped cake for the guests to enjoy. A cake shaped like a baby wearing a diaper is slightly more involved, but also works great.
Now that you have your venue selected and decorations, and you have invited your guests, you are going to need some form of diaper themed entertainment to keep your guests occupied during the shower. You have a few options here. One way to keep it basic (and to borrow from a timeless party game classic) is to play a slightly modified version of that “pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey” game you probably haven’t played since your 5th birthday. However, keeping with the theme of the party, you can do something like “pin the safety pin on the diaper”, or “pin the diaper on the baby” (please do not use a REAL baby for this game).
To complement your diaper themed games and decor, you may want to put out some diaper themed snacks. You can get very creative again. If you want to keep it basic, bake some diaper shaped cookies, or baby shaped cookies and color on a diaper with white frosting (Gingerbread men make a great template for this). You can also set out large bowls of chips, dip, etc., and wrap the bowl itself in a diaper.
